Chapter 05 / Launch stories

Startup product launch stories, and the lesson in each

These startup product launch stories come from one founder's 45+ year career in product, from a self-sold couture line in 1980 to 15+ years on QVC and two later brands.

What can founders learn from real startup product launch stories?

Founders learn most from launch stories at their own scale, where one person made the product decisions. The Product Launch Field Guide, published by Cydney Mar, collects five stories from Cydney's career and pulls out one practical lesson from each, so a new founder can use them before their own launch.

  1. No. 01

A couture collection, sold by the designer herself

    1980

Cydney Mar began her first company in 1980 with a couture collection in silk jacquards, handmade chenilles, and crepe wools. She sold it herself because she wanted to understand what women wanted, and her garments shipped across Canada.

Lesson for founders: Sell your first product yourself. Direct conversations with buyers are the fastest product research there is.

  2. No. 02

Cirque du Soleil's first Boutique Collection

    Career

Cydney designed Cirque du Soleil's first Boutique Collection and led design for Edwin Jeans in North America, after winning awards in New York in design, merchandising, and fashion illustration.

Lesson for founders: Brand partners need product that fits their story. Clarity about the customer comes before the first sketch.

  3. No. 03

Selling her own collections on QVC in 8 countries

    15+ years

For more than 15 years Cydney sold her own collections on QVC TV shopping channels in 8 countries, with more than 800 hours of live television. Her career sales total over $300 million across retail, TV, and DTC.

Lesson for founders: TV shopping rewards products that demonstrate clearly and presenters who explain them with confidence.

  4. No. 04

Cydney Mar Wellness, born from a health crisis

    Reinvention

After a near death experience left her with almost no hair, a naturopath created a formula that helped it grow back. That became Cydney Mar Wellness: vitamins made in Canada with a Montreal manufacturing partner, Health Canada licensed with NPNs, and third party tested.

Lesson for founders: In regulated categories, the right manufacturing partner and the right licensing are part of the product.

  5. No. 05

Face Mask Love, built for a sudden need

    Pandemic

In response to the pandemic, Cydney created Face Mask Love: well fitting, fashionable, unisex, reusable masks. Her design background let her draft her own patterns for fit, and the brand built in a way to give back.

Lesson for founders: Speed comes from skills you already have. Patternmaking in-house meant fit was solved before launch.

What do these launch stories have in common?

Each launch started with a clear customer and a product that could be made consistently, then matched a channel to the product: direct sales for couture, TV for demonstrable collections, and trusted manufacturing for vitamins. That is the same order as the Concept-to-Reality Pathway. Cydney has also said that starting over does not mean starting from scratch: the skills from one launch carry into the next.

This chapter supports the main guide to product launch strategies for founders, which ties every stage together.
